Diets & Nutrition

Ideally the food you eat should help you become healthier. The food you eat can help you prevent diseases. To achieve that you have to know how much food your body need daily. You also have to know the nutritional value and composition of the foods you eat. Basically you have two choices:
-you can become your own nutritionist and learn what foods are good for you at certain times. This is the slow and cost effective way. The advantage is that you will be able to have a healthy nutrition for life if you learn how to do it yourself.
-you can hire a nutritionist who will create for you a list of recommended foods and how to eat them. This is the fast but a little costly way. If you want to get on the fast track to healthy eating habits this is great.

What I recommend is that you combine the two. Go to a nutritionist so you get started. At the same time you learn how to be your own nutritionist. Your body needs optimum quantities of different nutrients, vitamins and minerals. You are the only one that can make sure that at every step your body gets what it needs.

By eating you bring in your body all the nutrients it needs. Nutrients are indispensable for the growth and development of your body. The daily vital processes that take place in your body need different nutrients on a daily basis. The nutritive elements proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins are found in different quantities in different foods.

The opinions of the nutrition gurus are split in two:
-some believe that ensuring the daily necessary quantities of minerals and vitamins cannot be achieved from the food you eat during the day. They believe you have to eat food supplements. I cannot imagine what the caveman used to take for a food supplement.
-others believe that you can take the daily needed vitamins and minerals form the food you eat daily. I am in this group by the way.

Studies have shown that a vegetarian nutrition can ensure all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals your body needs. The condition would be to eat a great variety of vegetables and fruits. You have to combine the vegetarian foods you eat. That way the lack of a nutrient form one food is replaced by eating another food containing it. You basically have to be a food alchemist if you want to be a vegetarian.

Vegetables and fruits have to be eaten with legumes and whole grain cereals. You should eat them raw if you can. Heat reduces the quantity of vitamins and minerals form food. The alkaline environment created by eating lots of vegetables and fruits will also reduce the quantity of calcium you lose on the renal level.

Now don’t get me wrong. I don’t suggest you should become a vegetarian. I love meat. There is nothing better in this world than a good steak. But a steak without a raw salad isn’t that great either. What I say is that you should eat more fruits and vegetables.

Meat contains huge quantities of iron, high quality proteins, and vitamin B12. The lack of these nutrients leads to anemia which is a plague that torments many vegetarians. Short periods of 1-2 days of eating veggies and fruits are great for your health, but going overboard can be really unhealthy if done wrong.

Balance is key. Learn to eat more healthy and all types of food to stay healthy. Life is great any you must be healthy to enjoy life to the fullest.
